Real People, Real Transformation
These are the stories that keep us going. Each one represents a person who found support, stability, and a path forward through the Birmingham Re-Entry Alliance.

John R.'s Story
From 30 Years of Addiction to House Manager
John R. is a U.S. Navy veteran who was released from incarceration in June 2025. Upon release, he was required to wear an ankle monitor and undergo regular drug testing. Through the Birmingham Re-Entry Alliance, John was connected with housing at Three Hots and a Cot and found employment at the Veterans Administration.
With a substance use history dating back 30 years, John has now achieved the longest period of being drug-free in his entire life. His transformation has been so remarkable that he was recently offered a full-time position as house manager at the facility that first gave him shelter.
He is thriving.

Jodi's Story
First Apartment, Full-Time Job, and GED Classes
Jodi came to the Birmingham Re-Entry Alliance in need of comprehensive support. She received substance use treatment, transportation assistance, help obtaining identification, and extensive case management services.
Through the Alliance's coordinated support network, Jodi achieved something she had never experienced before — she moved into her very first apartment. Today, she works full-time as a delivery driver and is enrolled in GED classes, building toward a future she once thought impossible.

Jacoby's Story
Reunited with Family and Rebuilding His Life
Jacoby was released from incarceration facing the daunting task of rebuilding his life from scratch. Through the Birmingham Re-Entry Alliance, he received immediate housing assistance, employment support, and — perhaps most importantly — family reunification services.
The Alliance helped Jacoby navigate the complex process of reconnecting with his children, providing both practical support and emotional guidance. Today, Jacoby is employed, housed, and actively involved in his children's lives, demonstrating that with the right support, families can be made whole again.

Desean Simmons's Story
From Incarceration to Community Leadership
Desean Simmons' story is one of remarkable transformation. After his release from incarceration, Desean connected with the Birmingham Re-Entry Alliance and received comprehensive wraparound services including housing assistance, employment support, and peer mentoring.
What makes Desean's story particularly powerful is how he has channeled his experience into helping others. He has become a vocal advocate for reentry support in Birmingham, sharing his story to inspire others and working to reduce the stigma that formerly incarcerated individuals face. His journey from incarceration to community leadership exemplifies the Alliance's mission of not just supporting reentry, but fostering genuine transformation.

Partrell's Story
Stable Housing and Steady Employment
When Partrell was released from incarceration, he faced the same challenges that confront so many returning citizens — no housing, no job, and limited support. The Birmingham Re-Entry Alliance stepped in immediately, connecting him with housing through one of its partner organizations and providing employment assistance.
Within weeks of his release, Partrell had stable housing and steady employment. The Alliance's model of warm introductions — personally connecting participants with service providers rather than simply handing them a list of phone numbers — made all the difference in Partrell's rapid stabilization and success.

Marcus's Story
Recovery, Employment, and a New Beginning
Marcus came to the Birmingham Re-Entry Alliance with a long history of substance use and multiple incarcerations. Through the Alliance's partnership with ARMS Healthcare and other recovery-focused organizations, Marcus received evidence-based substance use treatment, including medication-assisted treatment (MAT).
Combined with employment assistance and ongoing peer support, Marcus has maintained his sobriety and secured stable employment. His story demonstrates the critical importance of treating reentry and recovery as interconnected challenges — exactly the approach the Alliance was designed to deliver.
